How I failed my way to success

How I failed my way to successHow I failed my way to successOne of my favorite verses in a song comes from Exhale by the great Whitney Houston. It says For every win. Someone must fail.I love those words because they remain true in anything that we do in ur daily lives, especially when it comes to things like work, orsmall geschftsleben.Today, I will take you through my journey to success and show you that being the Someone that fails isnt a bad thing.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreDoor to door life insurance Lesson 1Getting my life and health insurance license welches a great accomplishment for me it took two weeks of self-study and 30 minutes for me to complete the state-mandated test.Once I became licensed my first act was to establish myself with a few insurance companies and to go work with a larger insurance agency such as an Independent Marketing Organization (IMO).Thes e are sizeable independent insurance agencies that would train and assist you in the field of insurance sales if you signed up under them as an independent agent. These companies wanted good agents because they get a piece of what you produce. It looks like thisHow The Insurance Pie WorksHierarchyCommission %Override on My Sale%IMO (Independent Marketing Organization)115%5%MGA (Managing General Agent)110%10%GA (General Agent)100%20%Agent80%N/ABased on the above layout, when I sold a $100.00 insurance policy, I received $80.00 of it, and the remaining $20.00 flowed upstream, which was still a great deal. And dont let the 5% override of the IMO fool you, fruchtwein of them can have upwards of 30+ Thousand agents. The only issue for me is that I was doing this process door to door. When I started 11 years ago, insurance companies were sending out Mailers to ask customers if they wanted to purchase life insurance. If they sent the mailer back, it would come to myself or other agents as leads we would then take those mailers to the customers home and try to make the sale. The amount of time away from home was insane, and you never knew who or what was going to be on the other side of the door you are knocking on.It also didnt matter if it was cold, hot, or raining, you had to make the sale, and after only about two months of this, I decided there had to be a better way.I failed as a Door to Door life insurance salesman. However, I decided I wanted to offer life insurance over the phone.Lessons I learned from door to door salesAlways be preparedPersistency pays offWork harder to get better resultsHave a positive attitude maintain a positive attitudeThe senior health market Lesson 2At the time, there was only one life insurance company that I can remember by the name of Baltimore Life that offered life insurance over the phone. It was a one of a kind product some people didnt trust it, I knew surviving with just one insurance product probably would be hard, so I decided t o go into the Medicare Advantage space.Medicare Advantage is the Senior Health Space, and if you thought health insurance was complicated, then you probably would lose your mind with the Senior Products.Medicare Advantage was still a product where you needed to meet with people in person, so while I was onto something with selling over the phone, I still had to get into the field and work.I found out very fast that when it comes to the Senior Market, beingvery youngdoesnt work for you it just hurts because the Seniors didnt trust that I knew what I was talking about when it came to their health plan.I found myself doing more assuring and follow-ups than I did making the Sale, and some of these products had $0.00 premium. Can you imagine being so bad at selling something that you cant even give it away?At this point, I concluded, what if I sold Health Insurance, to people my age, over the phone?I failed in the Senior Health Market, but I figured the Regular Health Market would be grea tLessons I learned from the senior health marketTiming is everything, what doesnt work now, can work laterJust because something is affordable doesnt mean you can sell itBuild trust and rapport fast and earlyExcellent product knowledge can make up for being a poor salesmanThe Affordable Care Act Lesson 3I had a complete and total setup. I had two monitors, fast internet, and four phone lines for making and receiving phone calls.I knew how health insurance worked, and It was easy for me to build rapport with people my age or younger.Unlike the life insurance space, the health insurance space had already gone through the phase of selling over the phone, so several companies offered the product.I even had customers doing a screen share with me to complete the application process. This was right up my alley, the life insurance space was still trying to figure out over the phone, but the health insurance market was booming. Then comes theAffordable Care Act,most often known as Obama Care .As an Individual, I was excited about the idea of No Lifetime Maximums and No Declining People due to health issues. As an Agent, I was mortified because the structure on how health insurance companies could payout commissions would change.Around that time, I had enough life insurance companies offering products over the phone that I was able to start transitioning to life insurance.Once the law was enacted, I started to get the letters from health insurance companies about the changes in my commission structure and some companies even closed down.Since I expected this to happen, I had gotten the health insurance side of my geschftliches miteinander down to about 40% of my total book of business and immediately switched 100% to life insurance.Lessons I learned from the Affordable Care ActDont limit yourself to one stream of incomeGood times also come to an endYou should physically smile when you talk to people on the phone.Trusting my instincts was ok.I have a telesales career Less on 4I made it Or did I?Here I was, selling life insurance over the phone Like I had always dreamt, and I was selling multiple products.I had Fully underwritten term life for the young and super healthy, no-exam life insurance for people who didnt want to take exams, and final expense life insurance for people over the age of 50.If you needed life insurance, I could sell it to you over the phone, no matter your age orhealth conditions. The process had even caught up to the point where I could do an e-application through email with life insurance.I remember it clear as day the words of a general agent You will never be able to sell life insurance over the phone. But here I was, deep in my career, making anywhere between $60,000 to $100,000 per year, I had no boss (except for my husband), and no one could stop me.It didnt matter that I had to work 14 hours a day to meet my personal sales goals, nor did it matter that I couldnt spend as much time with my family, Right? While I was very gra teful for the income that being a Life Insurance agent gave me, I didnt like the lifestyle one bit.I lived for the weekend like everyone else the only difference is that I couldnt separate my work life from my personal life.I found myself answering emails when I should be relaxing, or trying to send in an underwriting requirement so that I can get a policy out of underwriting faster.I realized I was in a relationship with my husband and with my business and my husband wasnt having any of it.I finally started to normalize my work schedule and take responsibility for not working outside of work hours. Then, out of nowhere, my gut starts feeling something, some sort of shift.More and more customers are asking if I can email the quote, they are asking if there is anywhere zugreifbar, they can learn about life insurance.Customers no longer want to talk to me much, and most of them felt like they knew more about life insurance than I did.It was great that customers were becoming more educa ted about the insurance they were buying, and in my mind, it felt like everyone wanted to do this process without an agent. There was a company that I always wanted to be like by the name of EHealth Insurance they did everything in the Health Space, that I wanted to do for the Life Insurance Industry.Everything was online customers could learn about a product and purchase it from their site without any hassle from an agent. However, if they needed an agent, they were still there to assist. After doing some research, I found out that websites can actually make money and my companySimply Insurancewas born.I failed at having a career as a life insurance agent, but I saw the future of insurance The Online Market.Lessons I learned from my closer to a yes.Success wont always look how you want itIn 2017 I cre ated Simply Insurance, the goal was to be an online market place where customers could purchase life insurance online, all without an agent.I had no clue how to make money online, but there was a ton of education on it. I invested in education to become great at SEO and Content marketing. I had to know how everything worked.I decided I didnt want to share in the commission of an insurance sale, so I went the affiliate route with my website. This assured that I would get paid per lead or application submission once a customer decided to get covered.I took all of the lessons I had learned from my failures and put them into my online business. My family acknowledged that I would need to spend more time, in the beginning, to get things running. And guess whatAfter just two years, Simply Insurance is a six-figure online business. We went from selling only life insurance to offering Pet Insurance, Homeowners, Renters, Concealed Carry, Accidental Death, Disability Insurance.Simply Insurance w as founded in 2017, but it was started in 2008, so while I did build a successful blog in under two years, it took me nine years to get there.I also just co-founded a business by the name ofCredit Knocks, with a few good friends and our goal is to educate the average person on how to grow and rebuild their credit. So remember, it isnt about the failure its about the lessons learned. This article originally appeared on Your Money Geek. You might also enjoyNew neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happyStrangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds10 lessons from Benjamin Franklins daily schedule that will double your productivityThe worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs10 habits of mentally strong people

The Simple Secret to Getting More Opportunities at Work

The Simple Secret to Getting More Opportunities at WorkThe Simple Secret to Getting More Opportunities at WorkIn my company, getting a promotion isnt exactly easy. There isnt a lot of movement in the business as a whole (i.e., employees stay in their current standorts for years), and moving between departments requires a long application and interview process- and youre competing against external applicants, too.And maybe youre in the saatkorn boat Youre doing an amazing job in your current role- meeting deadlines, exceeding goals, and completing all your duties- but that isnt always enough to really stand out in your company and eventually get you from where you are now to where you want to be.So, in a place that may seem stagnant or slow-moving, how can you position yourself to be offered an opportunity beyond what youre doing now?In my experience, it comes down to one skill Helping others. It sounds simple, but when its 530 PM and someone from another department calls you with an u rgent request, it may not be as second nature as you think. To show you how effective this can be, compare these two extremes.Situation 1 The All-Knowing (But Rarely Helpful) EmployeeWhen I first started at my current company, everyone knew Jeff. He was great at what he did, and if you were on his team, hed help you out in an instant. Knowledgeable, tech-savvy, and quick, Jeff knew how to get things done. The herausforderung was, if you came to Jeff from another department or with a request that was even slightly outside his scope of work, hed immediately turn you down. Thats not my job, hed say, without even a suggestion of who to go to instead. Even if it was something he technically knew how to do, hed wave you away with a snide refusal. And so, its not surprising that while Jeff was well known in the company, he didnt earn a reputation of being a flexible, adaptable, and resourceful employee. He was good at his job- and that was about it.As you can guess, when opportunities for pr omotions, special projects, or positions in other departments became available, Jeff was never the first one to come to anyones mind. He didnt show that he wanted to be a bigger part of the company, so they assumed he wasnt interested.Situation 2 The Over-the-Top (But Effective) EmployeeA few months after I started with the company, an employee anthroponymd Jennifer started as a client relationship manager. We didnt work in the same department- or even on the same floor in the building- but it wasnt long before everyone knew her name. She was a constant communicator, sending me (and everyone on my team) instant messages and schmelzglass, and calling and leaving voicemails if we didnt answer quickly enough.Honestly, it seemed a little over the top (read flat-out annoying) at first, but everything changed when I had a request of my own. Whatever I asked of Jennifer, she got it done. And if it wasnt technically her job, she got me in touch with someone who could accomplish my request mo ra effectively. And her constant communication came in handy If something didnt get accomplished quickly, shed immediately message, call, or email the person to check up on it. So, you can bet things got done in a timely manner.Even as a new employee, Jennifer quickly gained the reputation of a person who not only got things done, but was willing to help out whoever and whenever- all for the sake of making the companys clients happier.A year later, she moved into the sales department. When her name came up in a conversation I had with one of the VPs of the company, he told me that when Jennifer had started looking to switch roles, every department had wanted Jennifer- so she had her pick of great opportunities. Now thats a pretty good position to be in, isnt it?As Ive tried to take this approach in my company, its certainly not always easy or convenient. Sometimes, I get emails requests for things that really arent part of my job description- but I do them anyway. Sometimes, I have t o take a few minutes out of my day to chat with a salesperson to answer his or her questions, or when an angry client is on the phone and no one else is willing to take it, I have to volunteer. But the crazy thing is, Ive already seen results. Once, after Id jumped on a client call to help a salesperson explain our implementation process, he sent an email to my manager and his manager, thanking me for my assistance. And recently, when my company launched a special project, one of the executives approached me, telling me hed heard good things about me from several staffers and wanted me to lead the team. And that only happened because Id built up a reputation that Ill go the extra mile to help anyone in the company, whenever they need it- or, at the very least (or if its really not my job and Id end up doing more harm than good), recommend someone else and put the two parties in contact with each other. In the end, its all about your attitude- committing to do whatever you can to make t he company more successful. Others will quickly take notice and want you as part of their team. All of a sudden, youll have more opportunities than you know what to do with- and that will put you in an ideal position when you try for a lateral move, raise, or promotion.Photo of people working courtesy of Shutterstock.

Safe Growth of Autonomous Systems Through International Regula...

Safe Growth of Autonomous Systems Through International Regula... Safe Growth of Autonomous Systems Through International Regula... Safe Growth of Autonomous Systems Through International Regulation 2017 Arthur L. Williston Medal Winning Paper Abstract By Austin Patrick Kraus Autonomous systems must be regulated to ensure that they change the world for the better, not destroy it. When Isaac Asimov proposed laws governing robots, he likely did not foresee his fiction becoming a reality so soon. As technology creeps towards more advanced machines, a need for global regulation and oversight should be considered. The ethical dilemma posed by even semi-autonomous systems becomes more acute with technology capable of making independent lethal decisions. A proposed new organization under the auspices of the United Nations, the Autonomous Systems Authority, would develop regulations for lethal autonomous technology that could be approved by and, if necessary, overridden by the General Assembly. Weaponization of semi-autonomous systems, such as reconnaissance drones, gives credibility to the possibility of armed autonomous systems capable of independently carrying out lethal strikes. With missed opportunities to take out Osama bin-Laden and in the aftermath of the September 11th, 2001 attacks, the conversation in the Pentagon and Langley was no longer whether to use armed Predator drones, but how to use them, even as proponents and critics discussed the ethics of such use. The debate becomes even more fierce when considering truly autonomous systems, capable of making life-or-death decisions without human intervention. Robotic technology can be split into two different control standards: human in the loop (HITL) or human on the loop (HOTL). HITL systems require a human to make some, if not all, decisions and actions taken by the vehicle. HOTL systems act autonomously while allowing for human intervention. While autonomous weapons have ethical and strategic benefits, scientists, commanders, and researchers have been warning of the potential pitfalls of autonomous technology should it not be properly regulated. In an open letter from the IJCAI 2015 conference, artificial intelligence and robotics researchers warned of the dangers of starting an AI arms race. They argued that such a race should be stopped before it is started. (Autonomous Weapons: An Open Letter From AI Robotics Researchers, 2015) One danger in allowing armed systems to have increasing autonomy is their inability to distinguish between combatants and civilians. Should an autonomous vehicle be given the capability to make life or death decisions, it cannot be programed to sense when something is wrong or when it has made a faulty decision (Lin, Abney, Bekey, 2012). While it is almost impossible to fully ensure the safety of noncombatants in modern conflict, using machines that lack the ability to distinguish between combatants and noncombatants could have catastrophic consequences without accountability. When humans make mistakes, they can be held accountable. It is impossible to punish an inanimate object. Before action can be taken to ensure safety and cooperation in the field of autonomous systems, appropriate governing bodies must determine what should be regulated. Under this proposed governing model, autonomous systems would be regulated based on three criteria: their application in society, their economic and trade impact, and engineering and technology limitations. For humanitatian reasons, HOTL robots would never be deployed without human support and HITL systems must have constant human observers. Domestic deployment of autonomous weapons would be restricted to non-lethal applications unless the aggressor is defined as an unlawful violent militia or terrorist organization. The economic and trade regulations imposed will also have a direct effect on the quantity and the authorized recipients of autonomous systems distributed. Sanctions prohibiting sales to countries with grievous human rights violations, limiting the quantity of autonomous systems produced, and creating and enforcing sanctions on offending nations will help insure international safety from autonomous exploitation. When considering the technological advances of autonomous systems, the engineering innovations need equally strong regulation. Before the systems are deployed, extensive testing must be performed and verified on all capabilities. Identification techniques, such as voice and facial recognition, and preventive measures, both physical and electronic, would be standard on all autonomous systems. Only conventional weapon systems allowed under current treaties will be deployed with artificial intelligence. These regulations form the basis for a reasonable society to safely regulate the emergence of this technology. With an uncertain and ever-expanding field of technology, regulation and oversight is necessary to prevent disaster. Because of the simultaneous potential for both progress and impending destruction, the authority and standards should be set by the largest intergovernmental organization in the world: The United Nations. Within the United Nations, The General Assembly (UNGA), the Security Council (UNSC), the International Court of Justice (ICJ), and the International Criminal Court (ICC) have primary jurisdiction in matters regarding making, enforcing, and studying standards and practices. Currently, the United Nations cannot effectively set and enforce regulations for a variety of reasons, due to an ineffective system of checks and balances. For regulations to be created and enforced fairly, a proposed new organization within the United Nations, the Autonomous Systems Authority (ASA), free from the veto power of the permanent five, could be established. This organization would include representatives from member states as well as experts from industry and academia. This way, resolutions passed by this organization would not be solely political in nature. The ASA would develop regulations and submit them to the UNGA for approval. Request for an override would be initiated by a member state and presented to the UNGA, requiring a two-thirds vote to overturn. These resolutions could not be vetoed by the UNSC and would be jointly enforced by the UNSC and USGA. Representatives from ASA would monitor all member nations developing autonomous technology to oversee design, testing, and production of these systems. Unfortunately, regulations that would benefit society as a whole have both intended and unforeseen consequences. The restrictions on developing advanced weapons technology could inhibit progress on civilian applications of the technology, as oversight through ASA will slow down production and design of autonomous systems. Regulations controlling the deployment of only HITL systems around civilian populations could result in countries pushing the limits of what is considered a human in the loop. The restriction of trade opens opportunity for back-door and black market deals. Legalizing autonomous systems as front-line soldiers could create an arms race on its own. Countries could begin to develop offensive systems either for fear of falling behind or in order to gain a strategic advantage against their adversaries. Transparency through assessment and verification must become a priority among nations in order to prevent the effects of these regulations. Autonomous systems represent another turning point in technology and ethics. While this technology can advance military operations and benefit society in general, proper regulations must be put into place to ensure the safety of society as a whole. For non-lethal systems, individual countries should regulate their development. However, for lethal systems, human kind has demonstrated its desire to expand and advance with sometimes unknown consequences. With regulation provided by the Autonomous Systems Authority, steps can be taken to ensure that this emerging technology will be ethically regulated for the benefit of all mankind. Professionalism in the Workplace - How to Conduct Yourself on the Job

Professionalism in the Workplace - How to Conduct Yourself on the Job Professionalism in the Workplace - How to Conduct Yourself on the Job Professionalism is defined as an individuals conduct at work. In spite of the words root, this quality is not restricted to what we describe as the professions, which are typically careers that require a lot of education and have high earnings associated with them. Many cashiers, maintenance workers,  and  waitresses  can demonstrate a high level of this trait, although  these occupations require minimal training and employees have modest earnings. An equal number of  doctors, lawyers, and  engineers- often called professionals- can display very little. You may wonder if anyone will even notice if you dont demonstrate professional behavior at work. As long as you do your job well, who cares? It turns out your boss, customers, and co-workers do. They will notice if you lack this quality and it could have severe consequences for your career. To discount the importance of professionalism would be a big mistake. It can affect your chances for advancement or even the ability to keep your job. How can you show your professionalism? Follow these dos and donts: Make It a Priority to Be on Time When you arrive late for work or meetings, it gives your boss and co-workers the impression you dont care about your job and, if it affects them, its like saying you dont value their time. Pay attention to the clock. Set alarms if you have to. Show up at least a few minutes before you are supposed to start work and return from your breaks on time. Dont Be a Grump Leave your bad mood at the door when you come to work. We all have days when we arent feeling our best. Remember not to take it out on your boss, your co-workers, and especially your customers. If work is the thing that is causing your bad mood, it may be time to think about quitting your job. If that isnt a good option for you right now, find a way to  make the best of the situation until it is. Dress Appropriately Whether you have to dress up for work  or you can wear more casual clothes, your appearance should always be neat and clean. A wrinkled suit looks no better than a ripped pair of jeans does. Choose the type of clothing your employer requires. If there isnt a dress code, pick attire that is the norm for your place of employment.   Save flip-flops, shorts, and tank tops for the weekends, along with clothes that are better suited for a night out at a club. Watch Your Mouth Swearing, cursing, or cussing- whatever you call it- has no place in most workplaces. Unless you know it is okay in yours, refrain from using foul language, particularly if those who you might offend are present. Heres a good rule of thumb to follow: If you wouldnt say it to your grandmother, dont say it at work. Offer Assistance to Your Colleagues A true professional is willing to help his or her co-workers when they are overburdened or facing a challenge at work. He or she isnt afraid to share knowledge, opinions, or simply an extra pair of hands. One persons success reflects well on everyone in his or her workplace. It is important not to be too pushy, however. If your colleague rejects your offer, dont push it. He or she may prefer to work alone. Dont Gossip While you may be tempted to tell your cubicle neighbors what you heard about Suzy or Sam down in accounting, gossiping makes you look like a middle school student. If you know something you simply must share, tell someone who has nothing to do with your workplace, like your sister, mother, or best friend. Try to Stay Positive Negativity is contagious. If you complain incessantly about your workplace, it will bring others down. Your boss certainly will not appreciate a drop in morale among his or her employees. That does not mean you shouldnt speak up about things you think are wrong. If you see something that should be fixed, give your boss feedback along with a plan for how to make improvements. If you are just complaining for no reason, stop. Dont Hide From Your Mistakes As hard as it may be to do, own your mistakes and then do your best to correct them. Make sure you dont make the same one twice. Never blame others for your errors, even if they deserve it. Instead, set an example so that those who share responsibility for the mistake can step forward and admit their part. Always Fight Fair You will inevitably have occasional disagreements with your co-workers  or even your boss. You may think that something should be done one way  while someone else will believe another way is better. Dont let yourself get angry. It doesnt matter how upset you are or how strongly you believe you are right, screaming in the workplace isnt allowed, nor is name calling or door slamming. Calmly explain your opinion and be ready to walk away if you cannot sway the other person or if he or she begins to lose control.   Of course, you should always avoid physical contact. Dont Lie Dishonesty always makes you look bad, whether its lying on your  resume or calling in sick  when you arent. A true professional is always upfront. If you are unqualified for a job, you have two choices. Dont apply for it at all or submit an application that reflects your real skills. If you choose the second option, explain how your other strengths compensate for the missing requirement. As for lying about being sick, if you need a day off, take a personal or vacation day. Dont Air Your Dirty Laundry While confiding in a close friend at work is usually okay, sharing too much information with the entire office is not. Be judicious about whom you talk to, particularly when it comes to discussing problems you are having with your spouse or other family members. If you do decide to share something personal with your co-workers, dont do it where customers and clients might overhear you.

Healthcare Reform Slated to Drive 2013 Hiring

Healthcare Reform Slated to Drive 2013 Hiring Healthcare Reform Slated to Drive 2013 Hiring Healthcare Reform Slated to Drive 2013 Hiring Rossheim While many organizations digest the impact of theAffordable Care Act (ACA) on healthcare staffing, one thing seems certain the pace of healthcare hiringin 2013will be hectic. Thats the consensus of recruiters and clinicians who themselves are almost too busy breath. On 2012, hiring has been gangbusters, especially from the summer on, says John Fulcher, CSAM, director of healthcare recruiting for Bauer Consulting Group in El Paso, Texas. Sensing that their rivals are on firmer financial footing, healthcare employers have picked up the pace of hiring. Companies now have to make hiring decisions very fast or risk losing talent to the competition, Fulcher says. The sectors of medicine with the strongest need to hire will follow the long-term trend. There will be continuing rapid growth in geriatric care and preventive health services enabled by the Affordable Care Act, says Gerrit Salinas, director of medical staffing at Snelling Staffing Services in Dallas. ACA Spikes Rising Demand for Healthcare Workers The continuing implementation of Affordable Care Act hiring will create a surge of demand on top of the growing need for healthcare spearheaded by the aging of the boomer generation. In 2013, more people will be seeking healthcare, and clinician-to-patient ratios must be met, says Fulcher. But health care reformisnt the only mammoth government program that will affect how much healthcare Americans will consume. Healthcare employers arent really sure what the ACA means, says Salinas. Many tell me theyre more concerned about cuts in Medicare and Medicaid. The Growing Demand for MDs With the ACA in place, the biggest trend in demand is for primary care and internal medicine doctors, says Tony Stajduhar, president of the permanent physician recruitment division at Jackson Coker in Alpharetta, Ga. Hospital employment is further stretching the already thin supply of primary care doctors. Employers know they have to add more primary care physicians to staff, so recruitment is more competitive and fierce than ever before, says Stajduhar. He notes that theres a shortage even before you put in the 30 million Americans to be covered under ACA. The physician shortage is exacerbated on the supply side as well, Stajduhar says. Residency programs arent growing, and the percentage of doctors age 55 and up is hitting the panic point. As hospitals strive to boost their top lines wherever they can in 2013, demand for some physician specialties will also rise. The most growth will be in the moneymaking service lines especially cardiovascular and orthopedic surgery, says Fulcher. The creation or expansion of service lines also requires headcount increases in supporting health occupations. Many Clinical and Allied Specialties Are Increasingly Competitive The same demographic trends among both patients and the health professionals who care for them will drive recruiting for healthcare in many occupations in addition to physicians. Salinas says that most competitive recruiting for in-demand healthcare jobs in 2013 will be for occupational therapists as well as hiring physical therapists,speech-language pathologists, specialist nurses, certified nursing assistants and home health aides. Health care recruitment in the therapy professions will be particularly strong. In OT, the range of job opportunities is fantastic, says Karen Jacobs, Ed.D., OTR/L, a clinical professor of occupational therapy at Boston University. With the aging American population, we seem to be recession-proof. OT has expanded its scope to include mental health, cancer care, child obesity, chronic disease management, and even telehealth, according to Jacobs. Skilled nursing facilities, schools, rehabs and home health agencies all compete for occupational therapists, who along with PTs, are in perennial shortage. But even as they compete for scarce clinical talent, employers at least prestigious ones are often setting a higher bar for health professionals in some specialties. Everyone wants you to have a four-year degree now, says Tara Malkiewicz, who received her BSN from West Chester University in spring 2012 and is starting work in an ICU step-down unit at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. Hospitals in bigger cities have more applicants to choose from. Penn Health in Philadelphia is huge, but I would have needed two to three years of experience. Indeed, geography can be a substantial factor in the difficulty of filling orders for clinicians. Were seeing surges in demand wherever theres a low supply of doctors especially in Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Utah and Idaho, says Salinas.

10 Great New Years Resolutions for Job Seekers

10 Great New Years Resolutions for Job Seekers 10 Great New Years Resolutions for Job Seekers If the first item on your list of New Years resolutions is to find a better job- perhaps one that offers more flexible or remote work options- its time to get serious. Just sending a resume and hastily assembled cover letter to every company that offers a position that is vaguely interesting to you is not the way to go. Instead, you should resolve to be smart and careful as you complete a more targeted search. Here are 10 New Years resolutions for job seekers: 1. Build a better resume. If its been a while since you updated your resume, invest some time now to improve it. Note skills that youve developed since you last added to it, as well as promotions youve earned or projects youve led. And then have it ready, in both hard copy and digital formats, to give to a potential employer at a moments notice. If youre prepared, thats one less thing youll need to worry about when the right job comes along. 2. Build a strong cover letter. Youll want to target any cover letter you write to the specific job for which you are applying. However, it doesnt hurt to create a basic structure for a letter, with some general language about your background, that will work regardless of the position. This will help you move more quickly when its time to apply, and speed can be vital to success for some openings. 3. Check your profiles online. Almost all companies will do a little low-key cyber stalking when theyre reviewing job applicants. If youre in the market, make sure your LinkedIn profile is updated and accurate, but also take a look at your other social media accounts. If you see a lot of potentially embarrassing content, tidy them up. 4. Build your personal brand. Your social media profiles are part of this, but branding goes beyond those sites. Consider creating a personal website to display some of your work and show off your skills. You also might want to create a blog, and add new content to it frequently. Anything you can do to make it easy for potential employers to find you and learn about your abilities will be helpful. 5. Create a timeline. Goals become more real and attainable when they include an element of timeliness. Decide on a target date for landing a new job and write it down. Then create a schedule of smaller goals to achieve on your way to that ultimate achievement. This will help you to stay on track and focused as you continue your search. 6. Think about the kind of job you really want. If youre going to take the time to look for a new position, it should be something you really want to do. In other words, determine what will make you happy- a higher salary, more flexibility, added responsibility and authority- and let that help drive your search. As a blog post from Robert Half International says, As you conduct your job search, have a clear picture in your mind of the job that would make you happiest and allow you to reach the objectives you’ve set. Without a clear idea of what this job looks like, you’ll have trouble finding the right fit. 7. Make a top 10 list. Just as you should seek a job that youll truly love, target companies that will be a good cultural fit for you. A blog post from The Muse suggests that you build a target list of 10 to 12 companies. One way to create your list is to start first with your dream company, and search for it in LinkedIn, the post says. From the company page, you can scroll down to the People Also Viewed section and find similar companies. Go to those companies’ pages and so on. 8. Build your network. Some people love networking, while others would rather have a root canal than attend a social event with people they dont know. If youre hunting for a new job, however, networking is part of the game. A blog post from Come Recommended says you should schedule at least one networking event every month and take other steps to build up your list of contacts. Following up is key to being successful with networking, the post says. If you don’t maintain your relationships on a regular basis, you can quickly fall out of touch with those people. When this happens, you could miss out on having a strong contact when an opportunity presents itself. 9. Prepare for interviews. Good friends and networking contacts can be valuable in helping you hone your interviewing skills. This is especially important when you have a conversation scheduled, but even as you begin your job search, it doesnt hurt to practice what you will say in different situations by participating in a mock interview. This will get you  thinking about the interview process and how to craft responses, the Come Recommended post says. Your friend can ask questions such as, What is your biggest weakness?, Why are you the best candidate for the job?, or Why do you want to work here?' 10. Learn new skills. While youre working on goals specific to job hunting, it also makes sense to enhance your work-related skills. The Robert Half International blog post suggests seeking additional certifications or education. No matter your chosen industry or career, change is happening all around you, the post says. Your skill set may need a boost to remain relevant and attractive to employers. Pursuing professional development shows initiative and a commitment to learning, as well as an understanding of what it takes to excel in your field. Seeking a new job is always going to require exceptional effort on your part. But if you follow these 10 suggestions and set goals along the way, you should be moving toward a successful search. And if that means you end the year with a better, more flexible, or more enjoyable job, you will be able to say that your resolution was definitely worth keeping. Start Your Job Search

About 1 in 5 of us cannot bear a coworkers bad breath

About 1 in 5 of us cannot bear a coworker's bad breath About 1 in 5 of us cannot bear a coworker's bad breath When you catch a whiff of your coworkers’ terrible breath, it can be hard to concentrate on what they are saying. As your coworker drones on and on about projects and deadlines, you are plotting an escape route from their garlic breath.Unfortunately, this is a stinky reality that too many of us experience. It can even stop us from doing our jobs and engaging with coworkers. According to a new UltraDex One Go survey of 2,000 adults, about one in five of us admitted that we “can’t bear” to talk to one coworker because of their bad breath. In fact, the majority of us - 63%- said that we have had to turn away from someone during a conversation because of it.It stinks! Too many of us deal with smelly coworkers at workMost of us are resigned to suffering in silence when it comes to bad smells. We would not even inform our friends about their smell, let alone our coworkers. Only 15% of respondents said they would tell a friend if they had bad breath. We recognize that talking about someone’s private smells in a professional environment can be awkward, no matter how diplomatically we word it. If you feel compelled to address a coworker’s bad breath, do not go the passive-aggressive route of leaving breath mints on their desk. Ask a Manager’s Alison Green comforted a reader who had this happened to them, telling them, “Whatever form it takes - anonymous notes, anonymous gifts of soap or breath mints, etc. It’s such a cowardly thing to do. People who do it may think that it’s conveying useful information, but it’s a horrible way to receive the message … and it leaves the recipient having to wonder who’s behind it.”If you feel comfortable about bringing up a coworker’s bad odor to them, you need to be “clear, concise, and compassionate,” as  Halley Bock, former CEO of Fierce Inc. advises. You need to tell them briefly and with compassion in a one-on-one setting. Leaving Tic Tacs on someone’s desk fails on all these counts.

How to Give Good Direction to Your Employees

How to Give Good Direction to Your Employees How to Give Good Direction to Your Employees Providing directions for new assignments and tasks is a normal part of the role of a  supervisor  or  manager.  How you provide directions via your tone of voice, word choice and body language go a long way towards gaining support and promoting a healthy workplace. Effective supervisors and managers work hard to cultivate their skills at providing direction to their team members. This post offers guidance for effective direction and delegation in a supervisory setting. 7 Positive Communication Practices for Offering Task Directions Always provide context for the task to be completed. People do their best work when they understand the importance of the task to the larger operation. When you take the time to explain the business importance of the task you are requesting to be completed, you are teaching and you are showing respect for the individual you asked to complete the work.  Be specific. Outlinine when the task must be completed and sharing any quality standards.Ask respectfully. Choose a respectful tone of voice, polite words and deliver the message with the appropriate volume. Contrast:  Hey, you need to go unload that truck, said in a stern tone to, John, the shipment on that truck is needed on the production line. Would you please help out and unload the truck before noon. There is little doubt the latter approach would be perceived as positive and the former as negative. Give them a chance to ask questions. Offer the individual being asked to complete the task the opportunity to ask clarifying questions. This step helps strengthen communication between the employee and supervisor and improves the probability of a successful outcome. The employee has the opportunity to confirm that he or she truly understands what is being asked of them.Trust your employee. Resist the urge to oversee or micro-manage the employees completion of the requested task. Part of learning to give directions effectively is learning to trust the individuals you are asking for help.   Reinforce your employees confidence. Offer appropriate thanks and positive feedback for jobs completed properly.  Give constructive feedback. Offer clear, behavioral,  focused feedback  for any tasks that are completed improperly.   Emphasize Teaching Along with Giving Directions Assess whether the task is new or complicated and merits training.Provide instruction and then offer the opportunity for the individual to practice the task with your helpful supervision.Once the individual has developed confidence for the task, allow them to complete the work without your supervision. Check back at a later time to validate completion, timeliness, and quality.  Offer positive feedback for jobs properly completed.  Offer remedial training when the individual struggles to complete the task on time or at the right quality level.   Beware These Pitfalls When Giving Directions Issuing orders in an aggressive tone. While certain circumstances, including emergencies or life and death circumstances, may merit orders, unless you are in the military, resist this urge.Responding to, Why? with Because I said so. This is a poor approach for parenting and a worse approach in the workplace.Asking in a vague manner.  Asking multiple people to complete the same task.Failing to recognize when an instruction is required prior to the individual completing the task.Failing to recognize that individuals may have conflicting priorities and deadlines.   Failing to offer thanks and positive feedback for a job well done.

Straight Talk About the Job Palm Restaurant

Straight Talk About 'the Job' Palm Restaurant Straight Talk About 'the Job' Palm Restaurant “Palm Restaurant”: If they’d Asked Amanda about The Job, here’s what I’d say… CBS aired its pilot episode of a new reality-competition show called The Job . Hosted by Lisa Ling, the TV series featured candidates who compete in a variety of challenges for a chance to win “a dream job at their dream company.”A reality show about the interview process? Sign me up! The career coach in me had to watch this! The first episode featured five candidates â€" Anthony, Maggie, Ryan, Jann and Alex â€" vying for an assistant manager role at the legendary steakhouse, Palm Restaurant. While I don’t think the show gives viewers a very accurate portrayal of the recruiting process â€" seriously, how many job interviews involved you working at their office for a day to test your skills? â€" I still think there’s a lot you can learn. In this first episode, the theme that stuck out to me was cultural fit.I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again â€" you can have all the skills in the world but if you don’t fit in with the company, you won’t land the job. This was well illustrated in last week’s episode. The Palm is known as a leader in fine dining and a longstanding family owned business that considers its employees part of the family. A quick look at their website allows diners to get a sense of what they should expect when they visit the Palm â€" a topnotch formal dining experience.[Spoiler alert!] Two of the five candidates â€" Alex and Anthonyâ€" were misfits right from the start. Alex had little to no formal dining experience and worked at a vegan restaurant. It’s not surprising that this vegan didn’t fare well while interviewing for a position at a steakhouse. And, although Anthony was a competent candidate, he was chastised when he showed up underdressed for the ‘on-the-job’ portion of the interview. I also can’t imagine owner Wally Ganzi approving of Anthony’s facial hair. While Anthony was not offered the job with Palm Restaurant, he did receive an offer from a restaurant with a laid-back atmosphere â€" a much better cultura l fit!The moral of the story? Seek opportunities where there’s a cultural fit. If you make it to an interview and you know you lack a certain knowledgebase that’s important for the job, do your homework.
